February is the month of love, and there is no greater than that the love parents have for their children. Maybe this is why the American Dental Association also declares February to be National Children’s Dental Health Month.
If you have visited Highlands Ranch Smiles, then you already know that family dentistry is an important part of what we do. We want to support your efforts to keep your children’s mouths as healthy as they can be.
Today, we want to talk about the pediatric services that our dentist office provides for families in and around Highlands Ranch, CO. We also will share some tips for keeping your children’s teeth as healthy as they can be.
Your Child’s First Trip To the Dentist
Bringing your son or daughter to Highlands Ranch Smiles for the first time is a big moment for you and for him or her. We will do everything we can so your child knows how special he or she is.
You can bring your child to see us anytime after his or her first tooth erupts. We do recommend bringing him or her in for a check-up around his or her first birthday.
You can encourage your children’s oral health in other ways, too.
Before their first teeth emerge, you can wipe their gums with a moist cloth a few times each day. Once he or she has teeth. Use an infant-sized toothbrush and a rice-sized squeeze of toothpaste to gently brush his or her tooth.
After two teeth have erupted next to one another, you can add flossing as well. Gently work the floss between your child’s teeth.
You can help your child feel comfortable at the dentist office by bringing him or her with you during your cleanings, too. We have found that this often helps your child understand what is happening when it’s time for his or her first cleaning and exam.
This first visit is a good opportunity for you as a parent, too. Our Highlands Ranch Smiles team will be happy to answer your questions about oral care for your child.

Fluoride And Oral Health
As part of this year’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, the ADA is encouraging kids to drink tap water.
Why? Because of fluoride, that’s why.
Fluoride is a mineral, and it can help our teeth in a few ways. First, fluoride can make your enamel stronger. Enamel is the hardest substance on the human body.
Ongoing Dental Care For Kids
As your children get older, their primary teeth will fall out. Their permanent teeth will come in, and later, they will get their wisdom teeth.
Our dentist office in Highlands Ranch, CO, wants to be there to help every step of the way. We welcome you to talk to us whenever you have questions about oral health.
One example of this is the orthodontic treatment that we provide at our office.
For many teenagers, Invisalign® is an excellent alternative to traditional braces.
Invisalign has proven to be effective on a variety of alignment issues, including overbites and underbites, spaces between teeth, crowded teeth, and crooked teeth.
By bringing your child to Highlands Ranch Smiles for routine cleanings and exams, we can monitor the changes as your child’s permanent teeth erupt. This will help you know whether orthodontic treatment is recommended.
Healthy Habits Are Important, Too
Visits to the dentist are important for every member of your family, but they aren’t enough on their own to keep your mouth healthy.
Your kids should also get in the habit of brushing twice a day and flossing daily. You should be brushing and flossing your children’s teeth for them until around age 3. This is when many kids will begin expressing a desire to be more independent, and that may include brushing their own teeth.
At first, we recommend having your child brush your teeth with you. This way you can model how to brush (scrubbing your teeth on all sides, brushing for two minutes each time) and how to floss.
You can keep doing this until you feel comfortable that your child knows what to do.
As another way to encourage your child to brush and floss, the ADA has created an activity sheet that you can download and print. Make it a goal to check all the boxes by the end of the month.
